Weather course:
Summary:
Clouds are made of droplets of water vapor and they are formed by the cooling and condensation of air masses.
Clouds can be distinguished into four types: high clouds, medium clouds, low clouds, clouds with vertical development.
  1. High clouds:
Cirrus, cirrostratus, cirrocumuli. They are between 6.000 m and 10.000 m hight. They are made of tiny ice needles because of the very low temperatures, that can reach also -50°c. They don’t create precipitation.
  1. Medium coluds:
Altocumoli and Altostrati are two examples of this type of cloud, that are between 3000 and 6000 metres. They can create only weak precipitation.
  1. Low clouds:
They are the strati, the stratocumoli and the nembostrati. An example of stratocumolo is the fog. They are found between 0 and 3000 metres of height. The nembostrati gives origin to precipitation.
  1. Clouds with vertical development:
Cumoli and Cumolonembi are two examples of this type of cloud that are found between 0 and 1200 metres, occupying all the layer of the troposphere. They give origin to violent precipitation.
